When I turn the cold start aid on my tractor it over heats and melts the coil(wire). I have replaced the start aid and it still melts down. Do I need to repalce the glow plugs or is something gone bad.

It takes 30 sec or so to heat up.

I'm not sure how similar the 1715 is to my Ford 1710 but I'm trying to figure out what is melting. My 1710 just has the plugs, a pre-heat position on the switch and a glow indicator. If it's the indicator that's melting after 30-seconds of use I'd think there's a problem. These engines are known to take quite a bit of pre-heating and I think of 30 seconds as on the short side of what I use.

There might be an over-voltage or low resistance problem. If the tractor is being started while on a battery charger then that might be the answer. If the pre-heat system is the same as on my 1710 I could look up the testing procedure for the speced ohm readings. ....

It is the indicator that is melting. You turn the key to the left and it the wire heats up. This keeps melting down and I have not found a mechanic who can give me an answer except it may be many things or a short somewhere
Thanks ....

Well, maybe we can sort this out here. There have to be some assumptions since I don't know the differences between a 1715 and my 1710. It would help if we knew they were the same basic engines. A 1710 has 'H843' stamped on the side of the block. Even if they are the same block there's a chance that 1715's were redesigned to provide faster pre-heats. If that's true, then 30 seconds may be an excessive pre-heat time. I'm curious if the tractor starts normally with say a 10-second pre-heat?

A good starting place is noting that on my wiring schematic the indicator is in series with the glow plugs and is fed from terminal 19 on the switch which loops back to terminal 17 and on to the plugs. Full current runs through the switch and indicator to the plugs. Anything that creates low resistance from terminal 17 could create excessive current through the indicator. It looks like the safety relay winding also is fed from 17. Continued on second post 'cause looks like you can't read anything very long.

Part 2: Premium memberships avoid this. My glow plugs (PN SBA185366060) are supposed to test at 1 ohm measured installed from the terminal to the plug nut. With the switch off there shouldn't be continuity between the connector to ground when the plugs aren't connected and each plug should test 1 ohm. That should be a good preliminary test for my 1710.

If the circuit tests good, there's a chance of a wrong indicator part (suppliers as well as different specs are sometimes substituted). My indicator PN is SBA185306091.There also a chance of a bad winding on the safety relay. Getting too long--more later if needed. ....
